How big are the groups for fixed tours ?

Libya Expeditions aspires to deliver unique, unforgettable Libya cultural and desert adventure tours, and we limit our fixed tours to groups with a maximum of 16 people. This allows greater interaction, personalized service, and overall experience.

For Custom Tours, a group can be as small as 2 people, or as large as 300 (or more).

Do I have to be part of a group ? Can I travel with friends or family and not part of a group ?

No, you do not have to be part of a fixed group , you may choose to tailor a custom tour for yourself, family, or friends. All you have to do is contact us with details of your Custom Tour, such as dates, number of persons, and tour itinerary and regions/places you want to visit, and we will submit a quote promptly.

Can I travel in Libya without the Tour Guide ?

Generally, no. This is because regulations and decrees by the Libya Ministry of Tourism mandate Libya tour operators to offer only escorted tours to Libya. This means all tourists coming to Libya must make use of the services of a Libya Tour Operator , who will arrange visas on your behalf with the Immigration Department in Tripoli. While there is some flexibility in the major cities where tourists may explore without the tour guide, this can only be by agreement with the tour operator. Outside the major cities (Tripoli and Benghazi) and in the desert areas, tourist police will join the group. They will bring their own vehicle. This is for safety reasons , for example if a medical emergency occurs in the desert and dispatch is required.

What about transportation inside Libya ?

The coastal road that runs a long most of Libya is well-maintained and traffic manageable. We own a modern ground transport fleet of modern minibuses, buses, Coaches, 4WD and luxury vehicles. There are regular flights within the country by Afriqiyah Airlines and Libyan Airlines serving regional towns within Libya, with multiple flights weekly to and from Tripoli and all the major towns and cities in Libya. In the desert regions, mode of transportation is exclusively 4WD vehicles. (not camels, though you can certainly ride them for fun in some of our tours!)

What will the weather be like?

Libya’s weather can be classified as Mediterranean with a touch of desert influence, with a short cold winter season that lasts from November to March, and warm weather from April to October. The ideal time to visit the Sahara and desert areas would be from October to April, when the day temperatures are tolerable. At night in the Sahara, temperatures can plummet to below freezing. This is the time frame we offer Libya desert adventure tours, we do not run desert tours from May to September.

The coastal areas can be visited year round, but it can easily reach 100 F and higher in the summer.

Will I need to bring extra spending money with me ?

All internal transportation, accommodation, drivers and guides, and meals and drinks is taken care of, so you need very little spending money.

You may want to bring some money for shopping and tips, but that’s optional. (though we highly recommend considering some of the exquisite traditional handicrafts and metalware found in the Old Souq in Tripoli, Ghadames, and elsewhere. They make great souvenirs !)

Where will I stay ?

In the cities and towns, accommodation can range from deluxe 5 star to 3 star, and guest houses in the smaller towns.

In the desert, tents are provided along with bedding supplies, and you may opt to bring your own tents /sleeping bag.

What kind of food will we eat ?

Libya offers a mix of Arabic and Mediterranean food which appeals to a tourist palate. Emphasis is on “whole foods” and fresh food, vegetables and fruits are readily available in most Libyan settlements. Breakfasts in the desert are generally fresh bread (local bread is excellent) with butter, cheese, jam or honey. A choice of hot drinks is available.Lunch is a mix of cold vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, olives, tomato and beans with tuna or sardines and cold boiled eggs. Fruit juice and tea are also provided.

After an evening coffee or normal tea with nuts and biscuits comes a three-course dinner, starting with delicious Libyan soup , the main course can consist of cous-cous, vegetables and chicken/meat/fish, and vegetarians would be provided with extra beans. Lastly some fruit salad and  tea are served.

Green tea making in the desert is a ritual which takes place at all possible occasions. It is likely you will have some fresh Tuareg bread made on one or two evenings using the hot embers of the wood fire. Tea and coffee are popular drinks in Libya. Green tea is taken hot or cold with mint and sugar.

Is it safe ?

Libya is a very safe and stable country, and houses a sizable expatriate community from all over the world, and a friendly and generous people. Libyans are moderate and secular Muslims that are tolerant, and this is reflected by almost non-existent crime in the country.

Anyone that has visited Libya would immediately tell you the one defining characteristic of all Libyans : hospitality ! Libyans are among the nicest and most generous people you will meet; don’t be surprised if you get invitations to dine at someone’s house after only a 5 minute chat in the street ! This kind of infectious enthusiasm and zest for life is a Libyan trademark in the region.
